Community-Based Learning Courses
The university definition for community-based learning (CBL) courses set, by the Office of Community Engagement (OCE) is, “CBL courses offer students a learning experience with an external partner organization and can include internships, co-ops, independent studies, clinical experiences, capstone projects, and culminating educational experiences”.
Each CBL course meets the following criteria:
- involve a community experience or project with an external partner that applies knowledge and integrates theory and practice,
- include direct service, research, or practice with the community based on course content,
- include learning objectives related to the application of disciplinary/course concepts to community activities, and
- have mutual benefit to the community partner and the student.
An audit of CBL courses is conducted biannually to ensure courses are current in the system, meeting the above listed parameters. OCE works with the Office of Academic Planning and Accountability (OAPA) and across academic units in the review.
