What Is the Signature Partnership?

The Signature Partnership is the University of Louisville’s place-based initiative focused on west Louisville. Through deep, long-term collaboration with residents and community organizations, UofL works to:

  • Improve education
  • Expand access to healthcare
  • Support economic development
  • Strengthen social and human services

for individuals and families who live in our urban core.

Since 2007, the Signature Partnership has been a model of how universities can engage with local communities to create lasting change.

Who We Work With

We collaborate with over 200 organizations, including:

  • Local residents
  • Jefferson County Public Schools
  • Louisville Metro Government
  • Metro United Way
  • The Urban League
  • Faith-based groups

...and many others to align and expand programs that directly address community needs.

We then incorporate the expertise and energy of students, faculty, and staff from all schools and colleges to support this work through:

  • Community-based research
  • Service learning
  • Health and wellness programs
  • Economic development efforts

Why West Louisville?

West Louisville, home to more than 60,000 residents, many of whom have faced decades of economic and social disinvestment. Despite the challenges, it is a community rich in culture, history, and pride. The Signature Partnership recognizes both the hardships and the strengths of West Louisville and aims to enhance the quality of life for residents by improving the overall educational attainment levels and improve health, social and human services and the economic viability of the community.

Impact So Far

Since 2009:

  • 21,000+ student engagement activities in west Louisville
  • 4,200+ faculty and staff projects, including research, teaching, and outreach
  • 200+ community partners engaged
  • $30+ million in grants and contracts secured for local service and research efforts

As a result, we’ve seen:

  • Rising academic achievement in local schools
  • Increased access to healthcare and wellness education
  • Support for small businesses and entrepreneurs
  • Strengthened neighborhoods and community networks

It’s a model for how universities can use their resources and expertise to make a real difference—while offering students valuable learning experiences and faculty meaningful research opportunities.
